How long does it take to fulfill a public records request?

The custodian of public records or his or her designee is required to acknowledge requests to inspect or copy records promptly and to respond to such requests in good faith. The Public Records Act does not contain a specific time limit (such as 24 hours or 10 days) for compliance with public records requests. The Florida Supreme Court has said that "reasonable" means the time it takes to locate a record, review it for exempt information, and provide a copy to the requester. The length of time will also depend upon the volume and scope of the request. A request for "any and all records" may take longer to process than a request for specific records. The Sarasota County Sheriff Office is committed to providing records as quickly and efficiently as possible.
E-mail addresses are public record under Florida Law and are not exempt from public-records requirements.
